Singing for Music for Minors

Often with state budget cuts, music education is among the first to go. As a musician, I am distressed when I think about children living a musically illiterate life. Sure we can always enjoy music as listeners in the audience, but there is definitely something special about creating a song, whether alone in the shower or performing in front of tens or hundreds or thousands of people.

Every year my a cappella group, The Special Guests, gives a free joint concert every year for our family and friends. This year we decided to spread the love of music and support Music for Minors, a local nonprofit that brings volunteer music teachers into Bay Area elementary schools. This small benefit concert was entirely my group's pet project. We paid for the venue, set up and cleaned up with some help from our friends, and brought light refreshments. And we sang.

In the end, though there were perhaps less than 100 folks (including the singers), we collected almost $400! Thanks to everyone who so generously gave!
